Dzisiaj, 9 listopada - w dniu jego urodzin, przypada dzień Carla Sagana. Dzień Carla Sagana jest świętowany przez miłośników nauki i racjonalizmu na całym świecie. Jest jakby naszym świętem.
Dowiedziałem się o tym o 11 wieczorem - gdyby nie to, może napisałbym o nim coś więcej.
Ja chciałbym napisać o tym, co ja o nim wiem. Opisać to, co jest mi o nim wiadomo.
Carl Sagan był nie tylko wielkim popularyzatorem nauki. Był naukowcem - astronomem, astrofizykiem, kosmologiem. Był również autorem licznych książek i popularnonaukowej serii telewizyjnej. Gdyby żył, kończyłby dzisiaj 78 lat.
Przede wszystkim należy tu wspomnieć o jego serii popularnonaukowej "Kosmos", która puszczana była prawie na pewno w polskiej telewizji (jeszcze w PRL-u). Mówię prawie na pewno, bo chociaż pewności nie mam, pamiętam z dzieciństwa fragmenty z różnych odcinków które kojarzę z tą serią, gdy oglądam je na youtube(*). Serię tę oglądałem jako kilkuletnie dziecko (chodzące już do szkoły) - prawdopodobnie nie oglądałem jej w całości, ale pamiętam, że byłem nią zafascynowany. Seria ta została stworzona na podstawie jego książki pod tym samym tytułem. I doszły mnie też słuchy, że ma być odnowiona i jeszcze raz nadawana (udział miałby w tym mieć nie kto inny, tylko Seth MacFarlane, twórca Głowy Rodziny).
(*) - Chociaż szukałem, nie mogłem znaleźć nigdzie potwierdzenia, że owa seria rzeczywiście była puszczana w naszej telewizji. Nie znaczy to oczywiście, że nie była, ale nie mogę tego w żaden sposób potwierdzić, na czym by mi zależało. Możliwe zresztą, że fragmenty które kojarzę, widziałem w innych programach popularnonaukowych - Kwant, Sonda - no nie wiem.
Inną jego książką jest słynny "Kontakt", na podstawie którego nakręcono film pod tym samym tytułem z Jodie Foster w roli głównej. Książkę czytałem i chociaż mi się podobała, wydała mi się zbyt optymistyczna, co odrobinę popsuło wrażenie.
Z jego prywatnego życia należy wspomnieć jego małżeństwo z Lynn Margulis - znaną biolog, twórczynią endosymbiotycznej teorii powstania mitochondriów i chloroplastów.
Jedną z rzeczy, które mi się kojarzą z Saganem to wykonane przez Voyagera 1 słynne zdjęcie Ziemi, tzw. Pale Blue Dot. Jego refleksje na ten temat można przeczytać w podanym linku, albo obejrzeć to video:
Zachęcam też do obejrzenia tego teledysku Symphony of Science, właśnie z Saganem w roli głównej (teledysk jest bardzo optymistyczny - myślę, że Sagan musiał być wielkim optymistą).

Science is more than a body of knowledge; it’s a way of thinking, a way of skeptically interrogating the universe with a fine understanding of human fallibility. If we are not able to ask skeptical questions, to interrogate those who tell us that something is true, to be skeptical of those on authority, then we are up for grab by the next charlatan, political or religious, who comes ambling along.
Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.
